What is Evolution?
Evolution is a theory of science that explains the evolution of genetic traits over time. The term"transmutation" was coined by Lamarck's student, embryologist Etienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire to describe this view. Charles Lyell, in his Principles of Geology, published in 1833, criticized the idea of evolution, and borrowed the term from Geoffroy’s student.
Evolutionary biologists define it more recently as a process through which living creatures develop traits to increase their chances of living or producing offspring. Over time, genetic variability can lead a population to develop new physical traits or biological functions. Natural selection is the mechanism that triggers the majority of evolutionary changes. Changes that are not genetic, like an increase in muscle mass due to exercise or diet, cannot be considered to be evolution since they don't pass on to future generations.
Creationists make the argument that evolution is controversial, despite the fact that it has been proven accurate by thousands of scientific tests and that it has stood the test of time. OECs are not as well-known However, they are just as committed to their beliefs as YECs. OECs believe that the universe and all life on Earth are billions of years old, and that evolution is an untruth.
Both types of creationism reject the notion that scientific theories such as natural selection and abiogenesis are able to explain the origins of life on Earth. They assert that evolution is inconceivable because it requires miracles. The founders of modern scientific thought shunned miracles in fear that they would lose their credibility.
Some creationists accept naturalistic evolution and special creation. They refer to their belief as "theistic evolution." This is sometimes also known as "continuous creationism" or "evolution from created kinds." The theory suggests that God creates the original species and allows them to evolve over time. These evolutionary changes eventually will result in new species that are similar to the original.
Some creationists believe that God created all living things and the entire universe in one event called the Great Flood. They believe that the original species were all created at the same time, and that they developed slowly afterwards. They also reject the idea of abiogenesis, and argue that the emergence of self-replicating organisms from nonliving matter is not possible.
In general, creationists oppose teaching evolution at schools. Numerous professional organizations, such as the National Science Teachers Association and the Association for Science Teacher Education support this position as do the American Anthropological Association and the Geological Society of America. However, certain researchers and educational institutions are more flexible and allow the inclusion of creationism and evolution in their curricula.
What exactly is Creationism in Korea?
When people think of the concept of creationism most often, they think of the United States. South Korea also has an anti-evolutionist group. Publishers of high-school textbooks recently announced that they would remove the mention of evolution in their textbooks. A group called the Society for Textbook Revise (STR) is an unofficial body that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research, has led the drive. The STR has won its first victory by removing from textbooks the evidence of the evolution and ancestor of the bird, the Archeopteryx. The next step is to eliminate portions of Darwin's notorious finch-research as well as on human evolution.
STR claims to have the support of around 4000 families and individuals. Its goal, it says is to cleanse the world of what it calls "atheist materialism" which paints a negative view for students. It also seeks to counter the influence of American Creationists in the United States. A survey of biology students teachers found that about half do not believe in the concept of evolution. The root causes are unclear, but may include religion and the absence of full-time creation scientists across the country.
The KACR has achieved a number of things in the past through lectures and seminar events. It publishes a bimonthly magazine, Creation, and has published books. One of these was a textbook on natural sciences with a creationist stance. It sparked interest among college communities. In 1991, a professor, along with a minister, began teaching Creation Science at one university. It is still taught to students today.
On August 6-7 in 1993, the same day that the World Expo opened in Daejeon, KACR held a second International Symposium on Creation Research. Six lecturers from the world, including ICR's John Morris, Duane Gish, and Steven Austin spoke to audiences of over a thousand.
